One-On-One Type Coaching

People hire personal trainers to help them get their body into shape. You hire a life coach to help you get your life into shape.

Coaching is like a series of custom workshops focused entirely on your personal goals. In 45-minute phone calls we explore the areas of your life where you want to make a difference, and develop a plan of action to move in that direction. You come to the calls on a regular basis with no other purpose than your own personal growth.

What is Type Coaching?
Type coaching is identical to regular Coaching, with one major exception:  we will use the model and language of type to support the work we do.  Type provides us with a strong basis to tap into and leverage our time together.  It also gives us an advantage – a shortcut, if you will – for understanding how you’re “wired.”  Thankfully, this means I won’t expect you to “be like me” – or like anyone else, for that matter!  It also means we won’t devote as much time to learning how you’re “put together” as other coaches might – we already have the blueprint.

This assumes, of course, that you already know your pattern.  If you don’t, you would benefit most by undergoing my comprehensive self-discovery program.  This course teaches you the type models and allows you to “discover” yourself in them.  I alternate between teaching and coaching you until you feel comfortable embracing your pattern.

By now you may be puzzling about why you would benefit from type coaching if you already know your code and I’m not asking clients to change who they are.  Good question!  Following are three reasons why anyone would benefit from type coaching:

First of all, I’m able to verify your type preferences through multiple models.  The various “tests” available are far from foolproof* and, using the skills I’ve developed over the past decade, I can help you to ascertain whether or not you have been accurately “typed.”  This may seem minor, but is of singular importance since type is only useful if your code is right.

Secondly, we will assess how effectively you are deploying your preferences.  Are you honoring the gifts you were born with?  Are you using them to the best of your ability? Do you feel satisfied and fulfilled with your life?  Are you living your life’s purpose?  The answers to these questions may indicate areas worthy of further examination.

Third, we will take a look at where you need to develop – what is the Universe trying to tell you is in need of adjustment?  One’s type pattern explains what the preferences are, and yet we also have an inner drive to identify, claim, and integrate ALL of who we are.  Every one of us has areas of potential growth that must be addressed in our effort to achieve wholeness.  This typically requires some effort, and some development that wants to happen in order for you to realize all you are capable of being.  I am trained to help you with that exploration, and support you during the difficult process of development.  (See “What to talk about with your coach” to give you an indication of the kind of exploration we will undergo together.”)

The best aspect of this process is that I don’t do anything “for” you – I’m a co-active coach, so these are elements we’ll be working on together.  I’m not wondering what’s wrong with you — I’m wondering what’s right with you!  Imagine how awful it would be if I tried to “fix” you. Beyond the fact that no one can be “fixed,” the truth is that you aren’t broken.  To even attempt such a feat is an insult – it assumes you aren’t capable of knowing what’s best for yourself, and of course you do.

With type coaching, you may count on me being “in your corner” and helping you fight the good fight to be just who you are, and also to support your becoming everything you were meant to be in this world.  And you certainly could use some help — as e.e. cummings put it so eloquently,

“To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.”

I hope to meet and work with you soon!

*Dr. David Keirsey states, “My guess is that the various Jungian instruments — MBTI, (Keirsey Temperament) Sorter, Singer-Loomis, Gray-Wheelwright, MMTIC — are wrong about half the time, which is to say they misclassify about every other person.”  The MBTI Manual states that the assessment is never more than 70% accurate.
