You can choose what you do, but you can’t choose what you like to do. -Gretchen Rubin
This is one of the few personality models where we can talk about who you are at the essence of your being — more so than with any of the other models. You will uncover the “why” of your personality type using the model of Temperament theory, based on centuries of observing human behavior.
Other models describe what you do, and what your preferences are, whereas this model captures who you are at your essence, and why you value what you do. (Learn more about this model here.)
Many people are aware of this model, but few have tapped into the scope of understanding that is available through this framework. Some of the rewards of this model are the new understandings we gain about our behaviors, talents, values, and core needs — all things that are mostly unconscious to us. We lack awareness of them.
This model is sometimes represented as “inferior” to other personality models, including others used in the Type Discovery process. Somewhere along the way, others overlooked the power and potency and genius of this material. In coaching, this is the model I return to again and again to coach from. It provides me with valuable clues about whether someone is living “on purpose” or not. It shows me whether a client is moving toward what Abraham Maslow called “self-actualization.”
The core issues that show up in this model are so primary, and so much a part of who we are that it is a mistake to diminish it or treat it as lesser than the other models. It would frankly miss the point of what personality is all about.
Using this model, you will encounter 5 dimensions of personality to explore and measure yourself against. Each of these dimensions provide greater understanding of human nature, and insights into aspects of behavior you have probably never considered before. This phase, in combination with the second phase, will accurately reveal your type code.
